Plus it’s just nice to have the full size full quality original around for any future resizing for other formats. I always keep full size PNGs on the off chance I might ever want to print a picture (print requires good dpi (dots per inch) and image size to start with), or on the even rarer chance someone might want to do something official with one of my pictures (it’s happened a couple of times!). BMP images are considerably larger in file size than PNG. Technically speaking BMP images might edge ahead but I very much doubt anyone could tell any difference just looking at them. There’s not really any discernible quality difference between PNG and BMP. Some people also take the original in BMP, which is also a lossless format.

I know some people resize and save in PNG in the hopes it’ll squeeze out that last little bit of image quality but really if you’re just uploading to a social platform I really don’t see the point, no one is going to notice any difference. Once it’s uploaded I delete the JPG because I don’t need it anymore, and I have the original PNG should I ever need another copy in the future.

When I resize them to upload I save in JPG. I save all my original images in PNG at full size. You likely won’t notice the first couple of saves but you will over time. That means each time it’s saved it loses a little bit of information and slowly over time starts to introduce artefacts, gradually degrading the quality. That means it can be saved over and over and over without degrading in quality. PNG is what’s known as a lossless image format.

Don’t worry about asking questions, no one knows anything until they find it out!
